Vijay was born on 7 June 1978 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh to Sulom Prakash Sharma who is a school teacher and Asha Sharma who is a homemaker. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and communications from Delhi College of Engineering. He studied in a Hindi medium school in Harduaganj, a small town near Aligarh. He is married to Mridula Parashar Sharma and has one child with her. His inspiration is Jack Ma, Alibaba’s founder and Masayoshi Son of Softbank.

When Vijay was studying in college in 1997, he started the website indiasite.net, and sold it two years later for 1 million US dollars. He started One97 communications in 2000 which offered mobile content including news, cricket, scores, ringtones, jokes and exam results. He started Paytm while India’s telecom infrastructure was improving in 2010. His investors were not confident about the idea of mobile-first consumer service that would cater to the masses. He put 2 million dollars at stake to launch Paytm.
