Shyam Sunder Goenka was an Indian entrepreneur, executive chairman and founder of Tally Solutions headquartered in Bangalore which is India’s one of the first software product companies. He was a philanthropist and has managed to leave an impact on a lot of people’s lives.

Shyam Sunder Goenka Early Life

Shyam Sunder Goenka was born on 15 October, 1932 in Kolkata. He belonged to a Marwari family. His father was Thakursi Das Goenka and mother, Bhagwani Devi Goenka. He had studied in the commerce field graduating from West Bengal State University. In the late 60’s, he moved out of Kolkata to start his own textile machinery business called Vijay Bobbins and Industries Pvt. Ltd. in Bangalore. He has a son named Bharat Goenka who has also won Padma Shri Award. His son had huge interests in computers and used to write programmes for his family business. This gave Mr. Goenka an idea to make his son create a software. Both together had achieved great heights in the development of a successful software company. He has a grandson named Tejas Goenka who is the managing director of Tally Solutions now.

S.S. Goenka had a textile machinery business. While running it in the 80s, he was searching for a software which could manage his business transactions in an easy and efficient manner. But he was not able to find one. This enlightened him with an idea to develop such software and with the help of his son Bharat Goenka, he made it possible. He made his dreams come true and encouraged his son to fulfill his passion. He elucidated his son to develop such software which would be user friendly and could make lives simple. So with his ideas and assistance they created an easy and effective software called Peutronics Financial Accountant. 

He took the first version to unknown buyers and not among his social networks and acquainted dealers for adoption. That time computers were very expensive in India and hardly anyone had that but still his software received a lot of positive response. He was elated to get such a response which gave him hope to believe in the product’s progression and market reach. Though many accepted this software, there were few people who did not own desktops that time so Goenka’s had to suffer to make a wider market  reach. As said by his son he was an optimist and a risk-taker. He was a very good entrepreneur and used to make his own sales calls without asking for help. Then  along with his son he established Peutronics as a company in 1986 and later named it as Tally Solutions Pvt. Ltd. It was a blessed package and he believes moral and spiritual support has helped him achieve this success.

Tally Solutions has its headquarters in Bangalore. Mr. Goenka with his strategic ideologies and optimistic energy has been successful in expanding their company in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi along with an international office at London. He had a good vision and mission which augmented their software’s popularity with lakhs of people using it. He also laid the foundation for a strong channel partner network for Tally. Now Tally software is being used from small grocery shops to big international businesses. It has its latest version ranging from Tally ERP 9 to Tally Prime which helps in advanced accounting and inventory management along with e-TDS filing, banking, payroll and GST.
